Landscape: Perception of Reality

The ever-changing landscape, and the two windows of perception.

Mountain Metaphor illustration: Landscape

The ever-changing landscape represents the perception of reality. The path may be rocky or smooth, challenging or easy, mirroring the dynamic nature of our understanding of the world.

Symbol The twists and turns symbolize the twists and turns of life's circumstances.

Life is like a landscape, constantly shifting and evolving…

Practice prompt - Positive thinking with two windows: Imagine looking at the same situation through two windows. One window shows what is painful, limiting, or disappointing; the other reveals what is possible, meaningful, or still intact. This exercise is not about denying difficulty - it's about widening your view. By naming both windows honestly, you allow space for reality and choice, and you practice seeing where meaning, learning, or strength might still be present.

Backpack: Acceptance and Endurance

What we carry, and what it means to make room for reality.

The backpack symbolizes the ability to accept and endure. It carries the essentials - experiences, memories, and lessons - as one ascends. The weight of the backpack represents the burdens and challenges one might carry.

Symbol The ability to adjust the straps and distribute the weight represents adaptability and resilience.

Life sometimes presents us with challenges that we feel we can't overcome…

Practice prompt - Practising acceptance: Think of a situation in your life that you have been struggling against or wishing were different. Write down what this situation is like right now, using factual, non-judgmental language, as if you were simply describing what exists. Then reflect on what it would mean to say, “This is how things are, and I can live with this,” and note one way you could adjust your expectations, choices, or self-talk to make room for the reality without giving up on yourself or your growth.

03

Storm Clouds: Anxiety

The emotional storms of the journey, and listening to anxiety.

As one ascends, storm clouds may appear, representing anxiety and uncertainties. The thunder and lightning signify the emotional storms that accompany us on our journey.

Symbol Clearing the storm represents the capacity to navigate and overcome anxiety.

We've all experienced that uneasy feeling that creeps in when life feels overwhelming, like dark clouds gathering in an otherwise clear sky…

Audio narration - Written and narrated by Sandy El Chaar.

Practice prompt - Listening to anxiety: Take a few quiet minutes and bring to mind a recent moment when anxiety was present. Write down what the anxiety felt like in your body and what it seemed to be concerned about - was it something specific, or a general sense of unease? Then reflect on what this anxiety might be asking for right now: more preparation, rest, clarity, support, or reassurance. Finish by naming one small, realistic step you could take to feel slightly more grounded - not to eliminate the anxiety, but to make space for it in a manageable way.

Guiding Stars: Values

Values as the lights we navigate by - a guided exercise to name your core values.

The stars above act as our guiding lights, representing our values. They provide direction and purpose, helping us navigate through the darkness.

Symbol The brightness or dimness of the stars reflects the clarity of our values.

At the heart of our emotional experiences lies the powerful concept of values, which act as guiding stars…

Try it

  1. Find a quiet and comfortable space where you can reflect without distractions.
  2. Take a few deep breaths to centre yourself and create a sense of calm.
  3. Begin by thinking about your life and experiences. Consider the moments, people, and activities that have brought you the most joy, fulfilment, and a deep sense of purpose. Take your time to recall these instances.
  4. Now, start identifying the values that were present in those meaningful moments. These values are the principles and beliefs that guide your behaviour and choices in life. They reflect what you consider important and meaningful.
  5. Write down a list of values that come to mind. Don't worry about being comprehensive at this stage - just focus on capturing the values that resonate with you.
  6. From the values you have identified, select three to five core values that you believe are the most important to you. Write them down and consider why they hold such significance in your life.
  7. Finally, reflect on how you can incorporate these core values more intentionally into your daily life. Consider specific actions or behaviours that align with each value, and challenge yourself to find opportunities to express and live by them.

Practice prompt - Discovering your core values: The process of discovering core values is personal and can take time. Be patient and open to self-reflection. Your core values may evolve, so it's worth revisiting this exercise periodically to stay connected with what truly matters to you.

05

Fellow Travellers: Relationships

The other hikers on the path, and seeing another person's journey.

Other hikers on the same journey symbolize our relationships with others. Sometimes we walk together, offering support, while other times we walk alone, reflecting periods of introspection.

Symbol The conversations and shared moments represent the richness of our connections.

As we journey through life, our path is never entirely solitary. Even when we feel alone, we are always in a relationship with the world around us…

Audio narration - Written and narrated by Sandy El Chaar.

Practice prompt - Understanding others: Bring to mind someone important in your life and imagine them on their own mountain journey. Reflect on what their storm clouds (anxieties) might be, where their compass (values, goals, or sense of direction) could be pointing, and what weight they may be carrying in their backpack from past experiences or responsibilities. Finally, consider which Fundamental Motivation they may be struggling with right now, and how seeing their journey this way might soften your understanding or shape how you relate to them.

Hourglass: Time

Time as the framework life unfolds within - and how you spend it.

In our fast-paced world, time often feels like a luxury we can't afford. However, understanding the concept of time - represented by the hourglass - can help us appreciate its vital role in shaping our lives. Time is the framework within which life unfolds, and its limited nature directly impacts our relationships and personal growth…

Audio narration - Written by Sandy El Chaar, narrated by Preston R.

Practice prompt - Reflecting on time: Take a moment to look back at how you've spent your time over the past few days. Notice which activities feel aligned with your values, passions, and relationships, and which ones function more as distractions or ways of escaping discomfort. Gently reflect on whether you are chasing fleeting pleasure or allowing yourself to appreciate what is already meaningful, and name one small shift that would help your time reflect what truly matters to you.

07

Mirror: Self-Worth

The mirror of introspection, and a more grounded sense of worth.

Gazing into a mirror can evoke a myriad of feelings - confidence, insecurity, curiosity, and even fear. It is more than just a simple act of seeing our reflection; it is a profound journey of self-exploration. The mirror serves as a powerful symbol of introspection, inviting us to confront not only our physical appearance but also the deeper layers of our identity. In this reflection, we can uncover our strengths, acknowledge our vulnerabilities, and ultimately grasp the concept of self-worth.

Audio narration - Written by Sandy El Chaar, narrated by Preston R.

Practice prompt - The mirror of self-worth: Take a quiet moment and imagine looking into a mirror that reflects your sense of self-worth. Reflect on how much attention, justice, and appreciation you received growing up, and how each of these is reflected in how you see yourself today. Gently explore which of these elements may feel lacking now, and consider one way you could offer it to yourself - or allow it from others - to strengthen a more grounded and compassionate sense of worth.

08

Compass: Sense of Orientation

Charlie's story, and a question about your own search for meaning.

…Once upon a time, in a bustling city, there lived a person named Charlie. Charlie was like any other person in the city, going through the motions of life but feeling a deep sense of emptiness within. Each day, Charlie would wake up, go to work and return home… following a monotonous routine that seemed to lack purpose. One evening, as Charlie sat on a park bench, watching the sunset paint the sky in hues of orange and purple, a thought sparked within their mind. “Is this all there is to life? Is there something more meaningful that I'm missing?”

Audio narration - Written and narrated by Sandy El Chaar.

Practice prompt - Looking for meaning: Can you think of a particular time in your life when you were looking for meaning? What was it that brought you to that search?

09

Fog: Feeling Lost

Walking through the fog of uncertainty, and the next small step.

Sometimes in life, it feels like we're walking through a thick fog. We lose sight of the path ahead, unsure of where we're going or what lies beyond. This fog can show up in many forms - whether it's the confusion after a major life change, the uncertainty of a difficult decision, or the weight of a personal struggle. It's those moments when we feel lost, disconnected, or without a clear direction. It can be unsettling, leaving us searching for answers in what feels like a blur.

Audio narration - Written and narrated by Sandy El Chaar.
0:00 / 0:00

Practice prompt - Moving through the fog: Bring to mind an area of your life that currently feels unclear or uncertain, as if you're walking through fog. Reflect on what is outside your control in this situation and gently identify what is within reach right now - one small step, choice, or action you can take without needing the full picture. As you write, consider what this period of fog might be teaching you about yourself, your values, or what truly matters, and remind yourself that clarity often emerges through movement, not certainty.
